Why Costa Rica Doesn’t Have Proper Addresses

If you’ve ever tried finding an address in Costa Rica, you probably noticed something unusual: we don’t really use street names or house numbers. Instead, directions are often based on landmarks and distances.

How Costa Rican Addresses Work

A typical address might sound like this:
“100 meters south of the church, 50 meters west, blue house with a mango tree.”

Why This System Exists

  • Towns grew around churches, schools, and landmarks, not grid systems.
  • Many streets are unnamed or poorly marked.
  • Landmarks are easier for locals than numbers.

The Fun Side of It

  • Some addresses include funny descriptions: “The house with the big dog” or “Across from where the bakery used to be.”
  • Delivery drivers have become experts in this “treasure map” style navigation.
Two backpackers in a city street check a map, one pointing ahead. They wear casual attire, with a focus on navigating their journey.

Tips for Tourists

  • Use Waze.
  • Always ask locals — they’ll guide you
  • with kindness (and sometimes a smile at your confusion).
