Why Costa Rica Doesn’t Have Proper Addresses

If you’ve ever tried finding an address in Costa Rica, you probably noticed something unusual: we don’t really use street names or house numbers. Instead, directions are often based on landmarks and distances.
How Costa Rican Addresses Work
A typical address might sound like this:
“100 meters south of the church, 50 meters west, blue house with a mango tree.”
Why This System Exists
Towns grew around churches, schools, and landmarks, not grid systems.
Many streets are unnamed or poorly marked.
Landmarks are easier for locals than numbers.
The Fun Side of It
Some addresses include funny descriptions: “The house with the big dog” or “Across from where the bakery used to be.”
Delivery drivers have become experts in this “treasure map” style navigation.

Tips for Tourists

Always ask locals — they’ll guide you
with kindness (and sometimes a smile at your confusion).
